Well, this is beautiful!
How long did you etched it?

Thank you!
I etched it in 1-4 ratio of Ferric chloride - water. I did about 10 minutes, then took it out an polished it a bit. I did about three of these cycles.

Thanks!
I was using pure chloride and way less time. I'll try your recipe :)

Hope it works well!
You should be able to get ferric chloride online, or possibly at an electronics store (it's used in etching circuits)

I'm an electronic technician, so I had plenty at home =)
I tried as you said, but still couldn't get the same results. Perhaps it's a different steel in the cable?
I'll upload pics of the blade next weekend, so you can see.

Hum, that's odd indeed! Maybe the cable you have is low carbon.

Hum... perhaps. I'll try again next week. I'll make a piece mixed with iron and another one with high carbon steel and see what happens. I'll let you know as soon as I get it done.
Thank you for your advice!

Whoa...holy hell that looks cool.
How does it compare to a regular piece of steel in terms of toughness and hardness? It looks like there are issues with getting a consistent edge with some of those prominent seams, is that so? Also, do the seams weaken the blade, or is it more like fold-welded steel where the blade is actually strengthened by having many layers?

Either way, it's beautiful...

Thanks!

I am testing it, but it seems pretty similar to 1080-1095 in edge retention.
It's not really an issue, but there is a little divot in the edge where there was a big groove in the cable.
It's exactly like pattern welded or damascus steel. It is welded very well, so there is no strength issue, but it is purely aesthetic, there is no increased strength.

Thank you again.
